ALAFIA HOLISTIC CLOSING THE BONES
The “Closing of the Bones” ceremony holds transformative importance in post-partum care, honouring the physical, emotional and spiritual stages, a women experiences in her journey into motherhood. Immediately after birth the women’s body is vulnerable in an “open state”, her pelvis and bones have been widened, her energy has been stretched to its limits. Her sprit is often feeling expansive, tender and vulnerable.
During pregnancy, the body undergoes remarkable changes, the uterus grows from a size of a pear to a watermelon. The pelvis tilts forward and the spine curve increases. The organs of the abdominal cavity, are pushed up to accommodate the growing baby, and the muscles around the abdomen is stretched. During delivery the uterus, pelvis cavity, and pelvic floor and yoni is stretched to aid delivery. Post delivery the changes are reversed, accompanied by major hormonal changes and the beginning of lactation. “Closing the Bones” is designed to help speed up the healing process.
“Closing the Bones” is a spiritual and healing post-partum ceremony, rooted in traditional practices from indigenous cultures in Latin, South America, Mexico, Ecuador including Asia and Africa. In South America tradition, the rebozo is used; a long woven cloth or similar cloths to wrap and gently bind the mother’s body.
The ceremony is designed to support women physically emotionally and spiritually post childbirth, recognising the profound physical and energetic transformation that occurs during pregnancy, labour and post-partum. The ceremony acts as a loving gesture to “close” and ground the women. By nurturing the women sprit, marking her passage through one of life’s profound thresholds from maiden to womanhood. Although this ceremony is often done post-partum from two to six weeks it can be done for all women at any stages of their life. It is a good practice to have performed if you peri or post-menopausal, the crone stage of your life.Or this ceremony is not limited to those who have recently given birth and can be equally beneficial for women who birthed many years ago, or is going through feminine trauma.
At its core, “Closing of the Bones” is a celebration of the mother, as a vessel of life, a safe return to herself, and a ceremonial rite of self-love. It connects her with her ancestral lineage, reaffirms the power of community support. Whilst embodying, the gentle truth that healing happens not just through time, but through honouring the depth of childbirth.
Beyond the physical, “Closing of the Bones” offers a sacred space for emotional release and reflection. In this ceremony, mothers can process their birth experience and release any lingering fears, grief, or feelings of being overwhelmed, making space for acceptance and joy in their new role.
